Medals and Mementoes

Project Details

Edward and William Whitwood from Antingham both enlisted in 1915. William’s grandson, Alan, showed us their service medals and told us about Edward who was awarded a Military Medal for his bravery in 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.

We also see the medals awarded to a nurse who served in the Front Line, to an Army Chaplain, and to Earl De La Warr, who as Education Secretary, opened Stalham High School in the 1930s. Mementoes include a German ‘pickelhaube’ helmet, a Royal Flying Corps swagger stick, and a uniform for an officer in the Royal Sussex Regiment who was possibly stationed in Stalham in 1915.
